Rate of Decay

During an op, Colby's all muscle, shouldering his way though bombs, his broad back slammed to hell and back, his body battered while adrenaline keeps him charging forward like a powerhouse.

At home, when David's peeling off Colby's shirt and biting his tongue about always being the tough guy, Colby winces and whimpers like a little boy. It makes David tear up a little sometimes when he knows Granger isn't looking.

It's hard to watch Colby hurt. It's even harder to know that Colby doesn't care. It's part of the job he claims, but David knows better. The way Granger moves, the way he latches onto a goal, there's a part of him that's ready to give it all up in a heartbeat. David's not sure if it's selfish or hopeless. Or just too much wear and tear on a man who shouldn't be so jaded.

Colby's still young, still tough, but sooner or later those scars and bruises aren't going to get calloused and protected. They're going to lie raw and open, wounds upon wounds.

And Colby will still continue charging forward, leaving his vulnerable belly, his youthful smile in David's troubled hands.
