Title: How To Save A Life (named for the song by The Fray of the same name).
Pairing: David/Colby
Rating: PG-13
Author: Me
Disclaimer: I own nothing!
Summary: His voice instantaneously betraying both his love for David and his remorse for the two British soldiers whose deaths David knew Colby blamed himself for.
Spoilers: If you haven’t seen 2x21 Rampage, go watch. Now. Seriously. Set post 2x21, allusions to and mentions of the events of the episode, so spoilers for that.
Notes: Flangst (fluff/angst), worried!/consoling!David, dependant!/sad!Colby, early established relationship cuteness and sweetness. Can be seen an alternate ending or missing scene. Apologies for the lack of length. Feedback is loved & rewarded with cookies. I rewatched Rampage and look what happened... This story works better if you listen to
this while reading it.

Colby lay in the darkness, staring at the ceiling, watching the shadows shift and change overhead as he thought about that week’s case. He couldn’t sleep; the case had sent old memories he’d thought he’d buried bubbling to the surface, reopened old wounds he’d thought had healed. David’s snores filled the air next to him and Colby rolled over to watch him slumber. One arm was thrust up behind him and a small, private smile tugged at the corners of David’s lips as he dreamed of something that made him ridiculously pleased. Colby sighed and placed his head on David’s chest, where he could feel the stable, slow beating of his partner’s heart through the thin material of his t-shirt. David shifted at the sudden, additional weight and the beating of his heart changed to the equally steady, but faster pace of someone awake.
“Colbs? You alright?” David looked down at Colby.
The blond man nodded and avoided making eye contact with David.
The older agent raised his eyebrows. “No, you’re not.”
Colby shrugged. “Can’t sleep, David.” His voice instantaneously betraying both his love for David and his remorse for the two British soldiers whose deaths David knew Colby blamed himself for.
David wrapped his arms around Colby and pulled him close. “You know what happened in Afghanistan isn’t your fault, right?” His words mirrored what he had told Colby earlier in the parking lot at the FBI offices.
Colby nodded, “I know... But it doesn’t make it any easier.”
“Look at me, Colby,” David whispered. He placed an index finger under Colby’s chin and tilted the younger man’s head until they were looking each other in the eye. Concerned dark brown boring into sad dark blue.
“I just need...” Colby couldn’t finish the sentence. Tears he didn’t know he had were sliding silently down his face.
“What do you need? Tell me...” David used the pad of his thumb to wipe away Colby’s tears.
“... You...” His partner’s voice was barely above the quietest of whispers, but David caught it.
“I’m not going anywhere, Granger.” The junior agent’s last name had become an affectionate nickname that David uttered with an adoration and love so resounding that even the man who ran the polygraphs for the FBI could pick up David’s feelings for Colby.
“Do you promise?” David bit his lip, he’d never heard Colby sound so frightened and tragic.
“I swear it.”
Colby smiled sadly. “I guess I’ll just have to trust you.”
David grinned in spite of the situation. “You will.” He caught Colby’s lips in a soft kiss, which Colby leant into and deepened. They broke apart.
“Go to sleep, Colby, I’ll be here, I promise...”
Colby nodded, leant against David’s chest again, closed his eyes and was very quickly asleep.
David sighed, there was to be no sleep for him that night.
