Wednesday nights sucked. Like by definition sucked. Half way into the week and the bar was generally full with teenagers or some regular drunks, who never left any tips. Lucky if they pay their own drinks. So yeah, these nights sucked. Like tonight, Charlie thought, there are a couple of drunks, a bunch of teens and a few people who certainly look like they are at the wrong place. His shift was almost over and he made only 10 bucks. Tempting to call it a night, he looked around and decided to give the black guy at the bar a try. After all, he did look like he needed to talk.
-“What’s on your mind, buddy?”- He offered, trying to start a conversation- “You look like you are lost.” The guy looked up, smiled and started, what Charlie felt was, a very long monologue.
-“I heard somewhere that the biggest challenge in life is letting go. I don’t remember when or where I heard it for the first time, but I remember laughing my ass off, because come on! Letting go is like the easiest thing ever. The only thing you have to do to accomplish it is never let anything or anyone get under your skin and voilà, it’s done. I’ve been pretty much living my whole life like that. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not some cold hearted bastard that doesn’t give a shit about other people, well at least I hope I’m not. I mean, I believe that one day my grave would say “David Sinclair, a great friend” or you know, something like that. I don’t think there’d be “a beloved husband and father” on it though because frankly, I don’t see myself getting there. Ok, scratch that, I want to see these words on my grave, but I know it won’t happen…Bring me another one, would you?”
-“Sure thing, honey”-Charlie the bartender winked and poured the tired man another shot of Jack
“Anyways, where was I? Oh yeah, I was telling you how I become this uncaring and unattached to anything or anyone person that I am. You see, when I was growing up, I wasn’t a happy kid with a perfect life. We didn’t have money or other things that people consider important for a happy life, but it still felt like my life was good…Funny, I had this friend, who used to tell me to get my head out of my ass and look around, because come on, our lives sucked. And I used to tell this friend to shut it, because my life rocked. Till the moment someone upstairs decided that it has to take my dad away… Yeah, so there you have it, at the age of 15 I realized what it feels like to lose people you love. So from there on I decided that it’s time for me to grow up and so I did…Another one please”
-“Here you go” – the glass in front of agent Sinclair was miraculously full again
-“Thanks, so… As I was saying…Man this thing is strong…So I was saying, I learned not to let my emotions show. Be this really professional guy, who does his job well, gets promotions on a regular basis, you know, the guy who accomplishes something in life! Who gets somewhere not because of his folks’ money, but because of who he is! Another please!”
-“You sure?”-
-“Yes I’m sure! Come on!...thank you! So, I got this job here, in California, buuut, I’m not telling you what job it is, cause if I do, I might have to kill you…Don’t laugh, I have a gun…Somewhere…Anyhoo, so I got this job, and it was great, but after a year or so I met this new guy, I mean this girl! He, I mean she, became my partner and…”
-“Is he, I mean she, hot?”-Charlie played along, because now the story finally got a little more interesting, but still nothing more than ramblings of a tired half drunk men. Though there was something about this one, Charlie couldn’t put his finger on.
-“Funny…I don’t know, you may say that my partner is kinda hot, but…Not someone who goes for the looks, you know”
-“Of course you are not” Charlie laughed and made another drink, promising himself it’d be the last one for the guy in front of him- “So this partner of yours, what about him, I mean her?”
-“Well, we get along you know, and he’s fun, and smart, and I know he…she, always has my back, and everything, but…”
-“But you want more than just a friendship and he doesn’t?”
-“Yes!”- David slurred and drank the rest of his drink “Yes and man, it sucks, because I know that the job is important and that our friendship is awesome and…anyway, you should see the girls he hooks up with! They are so…I don’t know, he deserves much better than a waitress with great legs or a strip bar owner…He deserves…”
-“Someone like you?” Charlie was tired, in the end of the day, all of the drunken stories ended up the same way.
-“Yes! No!”- the man yelled
-“ So what is it? Yes or no?” it was kind of amusing after all
-“He deserves someone who cares, you know, someone who looks at him, mm her, and doesn’t see just a pretty face, but who knows the dark sides and still cares…Anyway, call me a cab please, I don’t think I’m in any condition to drive tonight”
-“Sure, I already did, now drink this coffee and chill” Charlie smiled to himself. He hoped that the good deed he did tonight
would make him a nice tip
-“Thanks man, I don’t know how I got this drunk; I usually don’t drink at all…”
-“Sure you don’t” – a dark blond guy appeared next to David and patted him on the back- “Now drink your coffee and I’ll drive you in YOUR car, because no way I’m letting you puke in mine”
-“Granger? Man what you’re doing here?”- David suddenly looked suspiciously sober
-“Your friend the bartender sent me a text”- Colby smiled – “I believe his exact words were-Hello sir, there’s a big black guy sitting in front of me, drinking himself to oblivion, you are number 1 on his speed dial, would you come and pick him up please, before he passes out? “
-“Guilty”- Charlie laughed- “Sorry man, it’s the bar’s way to deal with customers- snatch their phones and you know…call or text….” –it was a lie, but he really hoped no one would call him on it
-“So Granger, you came? What if it was some psycho texting to, you know, kill you or something?” –David was still unwilling to believe what he was seeing
-“Oh yes, a psycho would use THIS way to find me…David David…where’s your analytical mind man? Professor Eppes so won’t approve…”
-“Bite me” David snapped, sure his idea was a little bit dull, but he was in no condition to take someone making fun of him.
-“Sure I will” – Granger laughed and turned to Charlie – “Thanks so much for the help, now I’ll get my partner home before he starts seeing conspiracy in everything. And thank you once again for calling me, here, I hope it’ll cover the damage”- with that Colby pulled out a few bills and gave them to the bartender- “keep the change”
-“Damage? What damage?” –David started protesting while trying to put on his jacket without help.
-“Like you didn’t spend hours talking to poor Charlie here about your crazy ideas about the Kennedy conspiracy…” – Colby laughed and winked to the bartender
-“Yes, that’s exactly what we were talking about” –Charlie smiled and then added- “And hey, David… You are wrong, I believe SHE knows and SHE feels the same way…about the Kennedy assassination” –he laughed, watching the two partners going out. After all, it turned out to be a pretty good night.
